KINTSUGI

KINTSUGI and GINTSUGI are techniques to restore broken items to a more beautiful state by repairing the vessel with lacquer and decorating it with gold or silver. In my studio, I use the traditional methods that have been handed down from generation to generation in Japan.

Kintsugi commission work is now being accepted. Please contact us with photo of the piece you wish to have repaired, along with the size, and we will get back to you within 48 hours with an estimate. if you have not heard back from us after 48 hours, please contact us again, as we may not have been able to check your email.

Notice: Commission work for kintsugi will be suspended from May 2025 to the end of August 2025. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

FAQs

Is the restored kintsugi piece food-safe?

Yes, it is. Our kintsugi is repaired using traditional methods that use natural materials such as lacquer, which is a tree sap, so the finished kintsugi piece is safe to use.

Is the gold and silver used real?

We use pure silver and gold powder.

Can the kintsugi piece be put in the microwave or dishwasher?

We decorate our pieces with metal powder including pure gold and silver, so please refrain from using it in the microwave as there is a risk of discharge. Also, please do not put it in the dishwasher as there is a possibility that the lacquer and ceramic will peel off.

Is it okay to put water or hot water in the kintsugi piece?

Yes, it is okay. Kintsugi began as a technique used to repair tea bowls in the tea ceremony, so there is no problem with adding water or hot water. However, if left in water for a long time, water may seep into the space between the lacquer and ceramic, causing the decorated gold and silver to peel off. Therefore, please hand wash it immediately after use and towel dry it.

How much does it cost?

Kintsugi often costs more than the value of the piece itself due to the time, effort, and materials involved. The price varies depending on the size, the extent of the damage, the type of ceramic material, and the type of decoration (gold, silver, or other metal powders), so please contact us for a quote.

How long does the restoration process take?

The shortest time from receipt to completion is two months, but it may take around three to four months depending on the season and busy periods.
